You are buying charging equipment for a shop or fleet, not for a single car in a driveway. You have more than one battery in rotation, more than one technician who will use the tools, or a budget review next quarter. This checklist is built around one simple idea: a purchase order is only done when the equipment is installed, documented, and scheduled for review.
I am a procurement manager at a 76-person electrical field-service company. I’ve managed our vehicle and shop-equipment budget—about $210,000 a year—for six years, negotiated with more than 40 vendors, and logged every order in our cost-tracking system. When I buy Schumacher battery chargers, I run this exact checklist.
Short version: seven steps. Steps 1 through 4 keep you from buying the wrong charger. Steps 5 through 7 are the ones most people skip.
Step 1: Document the real battery duty before you look at amp ratings
The fastest way to overspend on charging gear is to start with an amp number. A 200A booster is not a bench charger. A 10A maintainer is not a rescue tool for a diesel service truck. Amp ratings only make sense when you know the job.
Before you open a spec sheet, answer these:
- What voltages are in your fleet—6V, 12V, or both?
- What battery types? Flooded, AGM, or a mix?
- Will the charger work in the shop, in a warehouse, or on a truck?
- Do those batteries mainly sit, mainly need boosts, or need full multi-stage charges?
- How many batteries move through the shop each week? Count them.
Checkpoint: if you can’t answer all of these, walk to the shop floor and take an inventory. The worst purchase I almost made was a high-amp unit for a set of AGM batteries that needed a specific charge profile. I assumed “same specifications” meant identical behavior across battery types. Didn’t verify. The manual caught it before the PO went through.
Step 2: Match the Schumacher charger class to the workload
Schumacher battery chargers are not one generic product line. There are maintainers, bench chargers, heavy-duty jump starters, and portable power stations, and each one has a job.
You’ll also see “Schumacher home” models aimed at garage use. Those are not automatically bad. They are simply designed for a lower duty cycle than the commercial units. If you put a home-model charger to work on a fleet every single day, it will spend more time in thermal protection and your bay will slow down.
The simple selection list I use:
- Battery maintainers: for vehicles that sit for weeks. Use these in storage areas and for seasonal equipment.
- Bench chargers: for everyday shop work. If you service vans, trucks, forklifts, and field equipment, look for a bench unit that handles 6V and 12V, has a real multi-stage profile, and includes a float mode.
- Heavy-duty jump starters: for diesel trucks and roadside calls. Compare cranking capability, not just peak-amp marketing.
- Portable power stations: for jobs where there is no outlet for 50 miles. Check output before you buy, not after.
Here’s the thing: a “one charger does everything” statement is usually a sign that the seller has not asked about your fleet. Schumacher’s documentation is detailed enough that you can match specific model numbers to battery types and duty cycles—so do that.
Step 3: Audit the outlet, cord, and shelf before you sign the PO
Battery charging is electrical work. That sounds obvious until you find a 15A charger at the end of a 50-foot extension cord on a circuit that already serves the compressor and the lights.
Checklist:
- How far is the charger from the batteries it will charge?
- Is there a dedicated circuit, or will other equipment share it?
- Is the area dry and ventilated?
- What is the actual cord length and gauge if you extend it?
The first time we ran four chargers on one circuit, the breaker tripped when two trucks were waiting. The real cost was not the breaker—it was the delay. We now plan the electrical layout before we approve the equipment list.
Step 4: Require documentation and certification
Strong technical documentation is one reason I keep coming back to Schumacher for charging products. Manuals, wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting codes save hours when something behaves oddly.
Before you order any model:
- Download the manual and confirm the charging profile is appropriate for your battery types.
- Check for an approved certification mark. For North American engine-starting battery chargers, UL 1236 is the standard we look for.
- Read the “not for use with…” notes in the manual. If a product says it works with every battery type, that is a red flag. There is no one-size-fits-all charging curve.

Step 5: Add forgotten maintenance items while freight is open
This is the step that separates a one-time purchase from a real stock plan. If you are already paying freight on a shop order, add the small consumables you know you will need this quarter.

At some point, a manager will type “gps person cars tracker” into a search box and ask you to order “the tracker thing.” Stop there. A vehicle tracker and a personal locator are different products, and the second one comes with legal limits.
For company vehicles, a GPS tracker is a normal procurement item. Look at:
- Installation: hardwired or OBD plug?
- Power draw: a bad install can slowly drain the starter battery, which brings you back to needing maintainers.
- Subscription cost over three years, not the hardware price. Hardware is the cheap half.
- Coverage in the areas where your trucks actually work, not just the areas where the cell carrier sells service.
If someone asks to track a technician rather than a vehicle, that is an HR policy question, not a purchasing decision. My rule is simple: no personal tracking device goes into the field until employment counsel has approved the policy.
Step 7: Put an invoice review on the calendar before you close the order
The purchase is not finished when the package arrives. It is finished when the order is verified, the model numbers are logged, and the review date is scheduled.
After I got burned by hidden freight charges, I changed our policy: every capital shop order requires quotes from at least three specialized vendors, and every quote must include freight and handling. We compare total cost, not unit price. That one change cut our budget overruns by a significant margin.
In our cost tracking sheet, we record order date, unit cost, freight, installation date, serial numbers, and warranty end. The sheet takes fifteen minutes to update. It saves the next purchasing cycle from starting over from zero.
Cost traps I still see buyers repeat
Three last warnings:
- Peak amps are not continuous amps. Use them as one input, not the deciding number.
- “Multi-purpose” is not “all-purpose.” A combination tool is useful, but there is no universal charger profile for every battery on the market.
- Skipping the manual. If the vendor cannot produce charging curves or safety documentation, do not order.
Looking back, I should have standardized our charging equipment earlier. At the time, buying per location seemed more flexible. It wasn’t; it just created three different setups to troubleshoot. The lesson cost us time, not a fortune—but it was still unnecessary.
This was accurate as of early 2025. Product lines and certifications change, so verify the current specs before you send the PO.
