At 6:12 one October morning in 2022, a customer called about a Jeep Wrangler that wouldn’t start. He had bags in the back and a five-hour drive ahead. Calls like that aren’t unusual here, but this one is the call I keep replaying, because the Jeep’s battery wasn’t really the problem.
I’m the service manager at our shop. I’ve been ordering equipment and chasing electrical problems for about 12 years, and I’ve made (and written down) six significant purchasing mistakes in that time—they totaled something like $9,000 in wasted budget. This jump-starter saga was roughly $1,400 of that total, and it was what finally got me to keep a checklist.
That morning, we grabbed the jump pack we had bought three months earlier. It was around $119 on sale, if I remember right. The box said “700 peak amps” in lettering big enough to end any argument. To be fair, it had started a customer’s Honda Civic the week before without drama. It was not going to start a half-discharged 3.6-liter V6 at about 40 degrees, but I didn’t know that yet.
The Jeep cranked once. Then slower. By the fourth attempt all we got was a click, and the owner had stopped making small talk. We called a tow truck, and because I’d told him our equipment would handle it, we paid the $185 tow bill ourselves. (Should mention: we’d also installed that “premium” battery about nine months earlier, so he was already starting from annoyed.)

You learn pretty quickly that a battery almost never dies while you’re driving. It dies after three days in long-term parking, after a long weekend, or after something in the car kept quietly drawing power overnight. Our old process was simple: boost it, load-test it, and sell a new battery if the numbers looked low. That worked when the battery was genuinely at the end of its life. It failed when the battery was fine and something else was draining it—which, more often than not, is the real story.

Look at the math on a modern dashcam. A camera left in parking mode can pull somewhere around 0.25 to 0.3 amps, depending on the model—don’t quote me on your exact device. That’s 6 to 7 amp-hours per day. An ordinary battery has maybe 40 to 50 amp-hours of usable capacity before cranking gets marginal. Four days of that, plus the vehicle’s own modules waking up to talk to the camera, and you’re already near the edge. Two weeks at an airport? Done.
One of our customers spent a whole evening comparing GPS rental costs for a car hire in New Zealand before a vacation. Then he parked his SUV at the airport for two weeks with a new OTA dashcam—the over-the-air-update kind—left in parking mode. He came home to a battery that wouldn’t do anything but click. As he put it later, the GPS rental was the cheapest part of that trip, by a long way.
Here’s the part I had been ignoring: a load tester tells you whether the battery can hold a charge. It doesn’t tell you what happens after you lock the car. Modules that wake up when a device talks to them don’t show up on a battery test. The only way to see them is to measure current draw after the vehicle goes to sleep.
We didn’t have a formal parasitic-draw process. The third time a “new” battery came back dead, I made one. Should have been after the first.
The Second Cause: The “Budget” Jump Pack Was Never Up to the Job
Even if we had diagnosed the drain correctly, the Jeep still needed a boost that morning. And the jump pack failed for a predictable reason: I bought it on price and peak amps, with no thought about what it was actually rated to do under load. Unlike a starting battery, which has a cold-cranking amp rating based on a real test, “peak amps” on a jump pack doesn’t come from one agreed, standardized test. One company’s 800 peak number can behave completely differently from another’s. And neither number tells you what happens after the pack has sat in a cold truck for three weeks without a charge.
To be fair, lower-cost packs do have a place. If you mostly start four-cylinder cars and you keep the pack charged, one may be fine. But we run a shop with vans, Grand Cherokees, Wranglers, and the occasional tired starter. That wasn’t the right tool, and I chose it anyway because the price was low enough to skip the research.
It also didn’t help that nobody had a charging routine for the pack. An emergency tool sitting at half charge is a paperweight with a logo. You find out exactly when you don’t want to.
The Real Bill: What “Budget” Actually Cost Us
When I finally added it up—I want to say early 2024—the math looked like this:
- $185 for the tow we paid because our own booster quit on the Jeep.
- $270 refund and rework after we sold a customer a battery that wasn’t the problem. The actual problem was an OTA dashcam drain.

That’s $865 in hard costs before labor. Add one free Saturday spent installing a low-voltage cutoff for a customer’s dashcam, plus the diagnostic hours we didn’t bill, and it cleared $1,400. None of that counts the Jeep owner, who never scheduled another job with us.
The Checklist: What I’d Do Differently (and Do Now)
None of this is sophisticated. That’s the point. It just has to happen consistently.
1. Test the battery, then test what drains it
If a vehicle comes in dead, ask about add-on electronics before you quote a battery: dashcams with parking mode, GPS trackers, remote starters, inverters. Load-test the battery. If it’s weak, replace it. If it’s fine, don’t stop there—after charging and letting the modules sleep, measure parasitic draw.
Since we formalized that, we’ve caught roughly four dozen comebacks that used to happen at 6 a.m. in someone’s driveway instead of inside the shop where we could fix them.
Side note from the counter: does Sprayway glass cleaner have alcohol in it? Yes—isopropyl alcohol, same as most spray glass cleaners. It’s fine on glass if you let it dry, but I don’t spray it directly onto camera lenses or plastic trim.
2. Buy jump starters by duty cycle, not by sticker price
Find the worst case in your shop or fleet: the largest engine, the coldest morning, repeated cranking attempts. Then buy a unit with real margin for that job. Look for reverse polarity protection, documentation that actually explains output and maintenance, and a charging routine that someone owns. Compare prices after you’ve done that, not before.
After we did that exercise, our service trucks ended up with the Schumacher 1200 amp jump starter. When a dead Jeep is sitting in a bay, that’s what we reach for—not the cheapest thing in the catalog. It wasn’t the lowest price at the register. 3. Put booster maintenance on the calendar
The first Monday of every month, someone checks each pack’s charge and logs it. It’s boring. It’s also the difference between a tool and a paperweight. We only learned that after discovering one of ours was empty at exactly the wrong moment.
And if you own a vehicle that sits for weeks—especially before a long trip—use a proper maintainer, not just a jump starter. The jump starter gets you going; a maintainer keeps the battery from joining the airport-lot club in the first place.

The hard cost of buying cheap was around $1,400. The softer cost was the customer who stopped calling. He didn’t complain. He just quietly decided we weren’t the shop that could be counted on at 6 a.m., and honestly, that morning, he was right.
Nobody sets out to buy a tool that doesn’t work. I bought on price and paid the difference in tows, refunds, and trust. The register price isn’t the cost. The cost is the whole chain of events that follows it—which is exactly why our checklist now starts before we spend a dollar, not after.
